Arlington,
Virginia (May 8, 2003) - The Arlington Partnership for
Affordable Housing (APAH) will receive the 2002 Housing Achievement
Award for "Project of the Year in Northern Virginia"
by the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND).
The award honors APAH's work to preserve and renovate the
Lorcom Arms Apartments, located at 2031 North Woodrow Street,
for low- to mid-income individuals and families in Arlington
County. The award will be presented at the 12th Annual HAND
Meeting on June 9th, 2003 at the Fairview Park Marriott in
Falls Church, Va.
"This
property was extremely vulnerable to being razed and redeveloped
into luxury housing," said Douglas Peterson, Executive
Director of APAH. "The preservation of these apartments
is an excellent example of how the power of partnerships can
make a difference the community."
The project
required the support of the nearby Waverly Hills Civic Association
and its financial partners, including United Bank, the Enterprise
Social Investment Corp., Arlington County, the Virginia Housing
Development Authority, and the Virginia Department of Housing
and Community Development, among others. Financing from these
organizations allowed for substantial renovations to the property,
resulting in improved efficiency, a reduction in operating
costs and an enhanced appearance, in addition to providing
urgently needed housing for larger families. Plans for a computer
center at Lorcom Arms will also deliver technology, education
and employment assistance to residents.
APAH also
submitted the winning nominations of Scott Ritter with United
Bank, who was named "Financier of the Year" in the
Washington Metropolitan Area, and the Waverly Hills Civic
Association, named "Nonprofit Friend of the Year"
in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Both were nominated for
their work related to the renovation of Lorcom Arms.
